4 Free Gifts that Will Warm Your Mom’s Heart
If your mom is anything like my mom, then she loves sentimental gifts. For moms, it truly is the thought that counts.
From homemade cards to coupons for hugs, giving sentimental gifts has become somewhat of a tradition for me on Mother’s Day. I’ve continued that tradition into the digital age, and put together a list of creative digital gifts that all Moms are sure to love.
Gift #1 - A Personalized Digital Story
Younger generations are always telling stories with technology. Just look at the popularity of storytelling apps, like Snapchat and Instagram. Both services have over 100 million daily active users!
One reason these services are so popular is that they make it relatively easy to record photo and video stories. If you’re not part of the Snapchat generation, don’t worry there a lot of ways to make digital stories that don’t require you to join a social network, including:
Adobe Spark Video for iPhone and iPad
Adobe Spark Video makes digital storytelling incredibly simple:
- Add a collection of related photos or videos
- Record voice narrations
- Choose a theme and transitions
- Add background music
In less than 30 minutes, you can create a beautiful video. It’s best to get specific - recap events from a memorable day, reminisce about favorite traditions or describe a cherished relationship. Most people go one of two directions with their narration - sentimental or funny. If you can add a little of both, you will end up with a story everyone loves.
Get Creative with Apples New Video App
Apple’s new video app - Clips is not quite as user friendly as Spark Video, but it has some cool “Snapchat-esque” features. You can add filters, text, stickers and best of all - live captions. When you record a narration, you can choose from various options to display your recording as text over the video.
I used Clips to record a video from my mom, featuring entertaining photos of my siblings and me. Happy Mother's Day mom! :)
Gift #2 - A Personalized Digital Music Collection
Research shows a connection between familiar music and autobiographical memories. In other words, when we hear a familiar song, it makes us think of a specific moment in time.
Not surprisingly, listening to personalized music has also shown to elevate mood. Pick out some of your Mom’s favorite tunes and give her the gift to music.
Create a Playlist and Listen to It Together
Keep it simple and create a personalized playlist using YouTube. You can lots of different services to make a playlist including Spotify, Apple Music and Google Play Music, but YouTube is nice because it's free and easy to share. Make sure to write a little explanation for why you picked each song and listen to your playlist together.
create Mom a Music Library
If you are an overachiever, build your mom her own digital music library. Upload her CD collection to a computer using iTunes or Google Play Music. You will also need to sync her music to her to any mobile phone or tablet. If you want to take this Mother's Day gift to the next level, include a pair of headphones or a bluetooth speaker as part of the gift.

Gift #3 - A Personalized Photo Album
Most moms love pictures, but often times, many of their favorites are saved all over the place - dusty photo albums, old computers, thumb drives and a collection of family smartphones and cameras. Do some searching, and create your mom a digital album that will take her down memory lane.
Google Does Free Digital Photo Storage and Scanning
Google Photos is great for creating a digital album because they offer unlimited photo storage for free. The Google PhotoScan app is also super useful. You can scanning old photographs; it automatically crops and color corrects photos.
This can be a great group gift. If you have siblings, make sure they share all their favorite photos too.
Gift #4 - A Printable Coupon for Tech Lesson
Within many families, the children play the role of tech support. Often, this role is not fully embraced.
Even the most well intentioned tech-savvy children are prone to an occasional eye roll or obvious sigh of frustration. One reason why this dynamic tends to result in frustration is that you’re only helping your mom with technology when something is going wrong.
Instead of being reactive, be proactive and help her learn to use an online service that she is sure to enjoy. There are endless options:
- Text Messaging features emojis, stickers and gifs
- Social networks such as Pinterest or Instagram
- Overdrive library app for free eBooks and audiobooks
- Popular Podcasts, like Serial or RadioLab
