Music, games, and family connections can help clients stay meaningfully engaged and reveal their best selves. While many seniors can consistently and thoroughly enjoy these experiences, they might lack the intuition or ability to initiate grandPad activities on their own.

Unlike younger generations, the inclination to send a photo to a friend or play a game while waiting for a doctor’s appointment, does not come naturally. This is especially true for client’s with memory loss. They can benefit tremendously from the experience of using the grandPad, but often lack the ability to self-initiate.

This provides CAREGivers with an opportunity to use the grandPad to help clients manage their own moods, while earning the trust and affection of the client and families.

STEP 1:
FAMILY SURVEY

Upon receiving a grandPad, clients and their families will be prompted to complete a joint survey regarding the client's favorite music, cherished memories, and social preferences.

STEP 2:
CAREGIVER TRAINING

The project leader will share the client's engagement preferences with designated CAREGivers during Engagement training.

The course introduces real-life stories of seniors and caregivers whose lives have been transformed though personalized technology. It prompts the care team to develop similar strategies for engagement based on the client's background.

CLIENT ENGAGEMENT

Once CAREGivers complete training, they will engage clients through personalized music, games, and family communications.

Providing care often goes under appreciated. It’s the memorable moments - whether that’s an impromptu sing-a-long to a favorite song or a video call to a distant family member - that will inspire clients and their loved ones to recommend Home Instead.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What’s involved in the training?

The CAREGiver Engagement training includes a series of lessons with recommendations and best practices for engaging clients with the grandPad. Engagement strategies are organized into three phases: starting with passive engagement, working as a team, and providing choices. Each phase is introduced through a short video, which tells a story about a senior and CAREGiver using the grandPad. At the end of each phase, those taking the course will be prompted to brainstorm engagement ideas for their client.

In addition to online lessons, CAREGiver will receive a packet with printed copies of the lessons, including blank worksheets for brainstorming engagement activities.

How long will the training take?

The training time will take approximately 40 minutes to 1 hour.

How much time will CAREGivers need to dedicate to engaging clients while onsite?

There is no set answer to this question. Engagement may be as simple as playing some personalized music while helping the client get ready in the morning. On the other end, it may include an hour long session looking at family photos and reminiscing.

A variety of factors will impact the length and nature of engagement, including the client's needs, abilities, and interests, as well as, CAREGiver responsibilities and time constraints.
